“Therefore, sexual and reproductive freedom is not simply a matter of privacy; it is fundamental to our and the law’s understanding of human autonomy and liberty. And so constraints on that freedom are not simply unconstitutional; they effectively reinstitute slavery.” —

JoAnn Wypijewski at The Nation

Nope, white lady. You don’t fucking get to say this. Also, NOT TRUE.

Clearly, I think that the assault on reproductive freedom is terrible. I fucking hate it. But to try to say that forced transvaginal ultrasounds are “effectively slavery” - NO.

I’m a historian of slavery in the Caribbean, which was, relatively, the most horrific space to be an enslaved person in the Americas. And when I think of enslaved women I think of terror, I think of sexual violence, I think of physical punishment, I think of hunger, I think of living in a constant state of non-consent, having no control at any moment to what happens to you.

The anti-choice legislation that is being proposed and passed is not “effectively re-instituting slavery.” She sounds like a fucking late-18th century British colonist talking about being “enslaved” by the British Crown. NO. Just. White feminist lady, I say to you: WHAT THE FUCK? Also, sit down and, for everything that’s right in the world, shut the fuck up.

As much as I would like to agree with you when you say that white women do not get to say this, Mrs. Joann is correct in the quote.

Limits on women’s reproductive freedom is a form of sexual slavery and failure to recognize that as such validates and justifies the radical anti-choice laws being passed in the states right now.

“I’m certainly not going to be silenced.” —Georgetown student Sandra Fluke • Responding to the controversy that began Wednesday, when conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh began a series of attacks on her character and asked that she upload videos of her sexual encounters for his viewing pleasure. Fluke became the target of Limbaugh’s rage after testifying before Congress on Georgetown’s contraceptive policy; however, Limbaugh’s comments cost him four sponsors, and condemnation from pundits across the country. Friday afternoon, President Obama called Sandra to offer words of encouragement and support, and Georgetown president John J. DeGioia defended the student in a statement calling Limbaugh’s attacks “misogynistic” and “vitriolic”.  source (via • follow)

palindromicmusings:

I have been satisfied the last two days simply to retweet and repost articles about Sandra Fluke and the disgusting response of Rush Limbaugh. I felt like other members of the Democratic Party, commentators, and peers had adequately expressed my views. This morning, the president of Georgetown…

Sandra Fluke: The Recent Personal Attacks are an Attempt to Silence the Voices of Women → sandrafluke.tumblr.com

sandrafluke:

I thank the thousands of women and men, including members of Congress, Georgetown University students and faculty, and total strangers of all political stripes across the country who have offered kind words and support following recent egregious personal attacks.

We are fortunate to live in a…
